Institute for Frontier Science (IFS) at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics was established at June 2021, with Prof. Wanlin Guo, a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician, being appointed as the founding dean. Aim at solving problems in the science frontier, IFS currently has three major research directions: 1) Hydrovoltaic Science and Technology, 2)Aerospace Data Science and Intelligence Technology, and 3) Advanced Material Science and Device Technology. By setting up a ‘special area’ for talents and disciplines at the university, IFS is committed to conduct forward-looking, strategic and frontier fundamental research as well as ground-breaking research.
Talented people are to the key of innovation. The Institute seeks to build a high-level research team specializing in frontier and interdisciplinary research, with chief scientists serving as team leaders. At present, nearly 50% of the personnel at IFS achieve national talent programs. The average age of faculty members is 33, with over 80% possessing more than three years of overseas study experience.

Vision
Carry out forward-looking basic research, promote interdisciplinary integration and innovation, and build a high-level scientific and technological innovation center and talent gathering platform. Strive to produce major academic achievements with forward-looking guidance and serve the national strategy, and strive for breakthroughs in frontier basic research of 0 to 1.
Planning
Build a team of 30-50 internationally recognized faculties/scholars specializing in aforesaid three research directions before 2024, introduce and train 5-10 national-level leading talents and young talents. In 5-10 years, IFS will have 80-100 researchers joining the institute. By then, IFS will become an important carrier at the university for gathering or cultivating scholars that are capable of conducting fundamental and ground-breaking research.
